Sugar Industry honoured top graduates

The Sugar Industry Trust Fund for Education (SIFTE) administered by the South African Sugar Association held a ceremony on 11 July 2017 in Mount Edgecombe KwaZulu-Natal to honour their 25 bursary recipients who graduated from their respective Colleges and Universities.

These students are mostly from the sugar cane growing provinces; Kwa-Zulu Natal and Mpumalanga. A majority of them come from families where their parents work as domestic or farm workers. The mission of the SIFTE is to support, promote and advance sus- tainable, quality education in South African sugarcane growing areas. Since their bursary program was founded in 1965, SIFTE has made it possible for more then 10 000 students to further their studies. Amongst some of their alumni, SIFTE boasts a number of South Af- rican’s prominent leaders including ministers of Higher Education and Training, Dr Bonginkosi “Blade” Nzimande Judge President of the Western Cape, Judge John Hlophe and KZN MEC of Health, Dr Sibo- ngiseniDlomo, Treasure – General Of the ANC, Dr Zweli Mkhize and his wife Dr May Mashego also receive assistance from SIFTE.
